EM SC 470W — Spring, Summer and Fall 2012
National Mapping Agencies, Geospatial Data Use, and
World Travel
Cindy Brewer, Professor of Geography, 325
Walker, [email protected]
Travel around the world and study mapping with the 2012 EMS CAUSE course.
By visiting three national geospatial agencies (for example, IGN France or Spain, Ordinance Survey in England… Australia or New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Brazil…), students will see contrasting approaches to national mapping. Students will use local topographic maps and data in each country for their projects, and they will gain global skills by traveling literally around the world. Participation in all three stages of the CAUSE course (470W) listed below is required:
- For the initial course in Spring 2012, before travel, students will learn basic GIS mapping, plan the country set for travel, and plan their map use projects (e.g., a geosciences major may work with geological data, a meteo major with agricultural area mapping, an EBF major with transportation networks, etc.).
- Summer international travel is scheduled for June 1 to 22, 2012.
- The Fall 2012 course, after travel, will be an intensive GIS mapping course where students use U.S. national map data to rework and refine map designs and data combinations that suit U.S. interests in their project area. Reports with proposed map products will be presented at the U.S. Geological Survey Headquarters in DC.
Information session is 6pm, Thursday, October 20, 2011, in room 008 Deike.

2. Your likely project interest (what particular mapping or map use topic do you want to learn about?).
3. What country would you like to visit and why?
4. Two examples of your co-curricular activities (student clubs, student governance, service, etc
