Dr. Mike Farrar, the Director of the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Weather Service, will present an overview of EMC’s current modeling systems, to include global and regional models for weather, ocean, waves, and hurricanes. In addition, he will discuss the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS), which will replace the current global weather and coupled seasonal models, which are currently based on a global spectral model, with upgraded modeling systems based on the Finite Volume Cubesphere (FV3) dynamic core. Dr. Farrar will also describe the strategic vision to evolve the nascent NGGPS modeling system towards a fully-coupled Earth system model in partnership with the broad U.S. modeling community.
