2009 Department of Geography GEMS Seminar

GEMS, or Graduates of Earth and Mineral Sciences, is the alumni society for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and along with the Department of Geography, is hosting the 2009 GEMS Seminar from Wednesday, Sept. 16, to Friday, Sept. 18. The purpose of the GEMS Seminar Series is to showcase the individual departments within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and promote general awareness of the unique disciplines found within the College. By doing so, the symposium is meant to recruit students from outside the College as well as provide options for those thinking of changing majors within the College; promote interaction and networking between alumni, professionals, faculty, and students; and underscore the importance of the business aspect of the discipline to society. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Thursday, Sept. 17 - HUB Auditorium
The GEMS seminar will consist of two panels: the first one featuring causes and mitigation of climate change, and the second one featuring impacts of and adaptation to climate change.

• GEMS Panel I: Causes and mitigation of climate change: Andrea Denny, EPA; Christopher Steuer, ICF International; Andrew Carleton, PSU; Petra Tschakert, PSU. Moderator: Brandi Robinson, Environmental Credit Corporation (1:00-2:45 p.m.)
• GEMS Panel II: Impacts of and adaptation to climate change: Andrew Comrie, University of Arizona; Rob Crane, PSU; Larry Kalkstein, University of Miami; Greg Knight, PSU; Robin Leichenko, Rutgers; Bill Solecki, Hunter College, CUNY. Moderator, Robin Shudak, Catzeye Studio (3:00-4:30 p.m.)
• Reception and career-oriented networking opportunity for students in the EMS Museum on the ground floor of the Deike Building (5:00-7:00pm)
