Warren Washington to receive 2010 Hosler Scholar Medal
Warren M. Washington, senior scientist, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and former chair of the National Science Board, was recognized by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Charles L. Hosler Alumni Scholar Medal for his extraordinary accomplishments in atmospheric and climate science and as a national leader in science policy. Dr. Washington will receive the Hosler Scholar Medal at the 2010 College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) Wilson Awards Banquet to be held on the evening of April 11, 2010. He will visit with students and faculty in the College EMS and Department of Meteorology on April 13th before returning to NCAR.
Dr. Washington received his B.S. in 1958 (Physics) and a M.S. in 1960 (Meteorology) from the Oregon State University. He received his Ph.D. (Meteorology) from Penn State in 1964, starting his life-long interest and accomplishments in numerical weather prediction and climate simulation. He has been a scientist at NCAR for his entire career and a leading light in climate simulation and analysis of the potential for climate change.
Dr. Washington’s professional honors and accomplishments are numerous; to include his membership in the National Academy of Engineering, President of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), recognition as an Honorary Member of the AMS, recipient of the AMS Jule G. Charney award for his collaborative scientific work and member and chair of the National Sciences Board, the governing board of the National Science foundation.
Dr. Washington has been one of the nation’s leading climate scientists for over forty years and exemplifies the best of America’s scientific enterprise.
